Major General (retd) Trond Furuhovde, former Head of Mission of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) passed away on Wednesday 10 May in Norway. Major General (retd) Furuhovde, who served as the first head of the SLMM from March 2002 to February 2003 returned for a second tenure from February 2004 – February 2005.
His stewardship was crucial in establishing the SLMM, the body responsible for monitoring and inquiring into violations of the February 2002 Ceasefire Agreement between the GoSL and the LTTE. He returned to Sri Lanka in October 2005 as a special representative of the Royal Norwegian Government to explore issues relating to the CFA.
During his two terms in Sri Lanka, SCOPP officials interacted on a weekly basis with Major General (retd) Furuhovde developing a close working relationship based on confidence and respect under trying circumstances. SCOPP expresses its deepest condolences on the death of Major General (retd) Furuhovde to his family and the Royal Norwegian Government.
