FIRST SEA MOVEMENT OF LTTE SUCCESSFUL, WITH SLMM INSPECTION & MONITORING

Four LTTE vessels left Mullaitivu 0830 A.M on Sunday the 18th and transported 170 cadres going on leave to their families in the Eastern LTTE controlled areas.
The convoy reached Vakarai around 1600 Hrs P.M.

At 1130 AM on Monday 19th of August the convoy departed Vakarai for the return journey, had a short stopover in Ilakkanththai (some 6 KMs South of Foaul Point), and arrived Mullaitivu around 1730 Hrs P.M. Some 80 cadres were passengers on this return trip.

The notification from LTTE about the first Sea Movement was in accordance with the new agreed procedures. It was noted and cleared by GOSL on Friday 16th August.

The LTTE sea movement was conducted under SLMM’s supervision, as SLMM Monitors inspected the vessels and passengers before all departures, and stayed on board the LTTE vessels throughout the journey. No serious incident occurred, but minor deviations from the planned sea movement were sorted out between the Sri Lanka Navy and the LTTE en route.

The Sri Lanka Navy observed and monitored the event as well.

Head of Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, Major General Trond Furuhovde, says that this event has clearly demonstrated the Parties determination and willingness to find solutions on complicated matters. “The sea movement, as challenging it is, can form the very symbol of commitment and confidence of the Parties.”
